Vol 5 Issue
June 2009

Editorial

At the end of May, we said goodbye (at least for the time being) to Rebecca Sheldon, Manager of LawWorks North, who will be otherwise occupied for the next year looking after her twins, who are due to arrive next month. I am sure that after project-managing the start of LawWorks North, looking after twins will be a good rest for Becs. A big welcome goes to Jan Hart, who starts as LawWorks North Manager this week – you can read about her later in this issue.

May also saw the formal launch of the audit by ALLIES (“a local lawyer in every school”), with the objective of determining the current extent of engagement by lawyers in school governing bodies. If you haven’t already done so, visit the link on our website and complete the questionnaire.

The big news, however, is that summer has finally arrived. Fortunately, the temperature only started climbing after the London Legal Support Trust sponsored walk (see later), to spare all those who foreswore the temptations of the Chancery Lane drinking establishments to labour in a good cause around the 6 mile course – to say nothing of Paul Newdick, our Chairman, last seen sprinting around Green Park in his jogging gear.

I hope you are enjoying the sunshine, and that it hangs around until next week, for the LawWorks Ball. We are now in the final countdown to the big event, at which we are looking forward to seeing many of you, preferably having a drink on the terrace in the gentle Inner Temple evening sunshine…

The 5th London Legal Walk – Monday 18 May 2009
The LawWorks team was out again in force at this year’s London Legal Walk, in aid of the London Legal Support Trust. This year’s Walk was the biggest ever with over 220 teams and 4000 walkers who collectively raised over £380,000 for free legal advice for disadvantaged people, a small portion of which will go to LawWorks.
Thanks to all those teams who specifically raised money for us and to those who sponsored our team and finally to the Trust itself for allowing some of the money to come our way. As soon as we know the total amount raised and the amount attributable to LawWorks we will let you know.
The money is still coming in and if you would like to sponsor our successful team you can do so here.
The walk took in some of the major sights of London and the rain stayed away before the celebratory drinks flowed at the Law Society and the Knights Templar pub on Chancery Lane.
LawWorks also had a hand in helping organise the event and managed to gather a strong party of student volunteer marshalls to help keep us all in check. This year, students from Queen Mary, University of London were joined by others from at least 5 other institutions. Thanks again to these volunteers for helping the event run so smoothly. And finally well done to all those of you who walked and donated. We look forward to seeing you again next year!

... meanwhile in Newbury - The Newbury Legal Walk – 18th May 2009
Whilst the rest of the LawWorks crew sweated it out in London dodging the traffic (and a few protesters) I managed to escape to the Berkshire countryside to walk with the team in Newbury.

The number of walkers was down on last year, largely as a result of the economic climate, but those who came along greatly enjoyed an amble in the countryside. Walkers included staff from the Vodafone in-house legal team and lawyers from Gardner Leader (Newbury) and Charles Russell LLP (Oxford) who together have raised over £1200 so far. Many thanks to all of those who took part in and sponsored the Walk – I am already angling for a return trip next year!

Practical Advice Talks (PAT) for Voluntary Action Westminster
On Tuesday 19th May 2009 LawWorks helped to run another legal seminar on Data Protection for 13 small community groups who are members of Voluntary Action Westminster.

The talk was delivered by Alessandro Liotta of London Young Lawyers Group and his colleague Justin Costley. Their informative and very detailed presentation got all attendees actively involved during the talk.

As with all of the practical advice talks run by LawWorks the session proved to be very beneficial to everyone attending. LawWorks for Community Groups will be organizing another session on Employment – Discrimination Law scheduled for 10th July 2009, 10:00 – 12:00 in partnership with Voluntary Action Westminster.
If you would like to deliver a Practical Advice Talk for LawWorks for Community Groups in the future please contact Kristina Velcikova.

Volunteering Opportunity for Employment Specialist
After a successful pilot the College of Law are opening their 4th employment rights advice line in London, COLETA (College of Law Employment Telephone Advice). The College already has very successful employment advice lines running in Birmingham, Chester and York. COLETA is looking for volunteer Employment Lawyers to advise clients by telephone on a rota. You will be assisted by two College Students, who will triage the call, complete research, and generally assist you whilst you advise the client.

The sessions will take place at the Store Street College of Law in the Legal Advice Centre, where full office facilities are available. You will be covered by the College's insurance and you can volunteer to do as much or as little as you wish. It is envisaged advice calls will take place between 6-8pm on any week day convenient to the Volunteer Lawyer. The advice will cover anything employment related, and calls will not be limited to pre-litigation matters. COLETA may also offer clients a FRU referral as the College of Law is a FRU Referral Agency. The Legal Advice Centre employs a Supervising Solicitor who specialises in employment, who will coordinate the sessions and is available to answer any queries concerning the service.

To volunteer please email sally.gill@lawcol.co.uk; or call 01483 216490

Pro Bono Team Shows Its Talent
LawWorks teamed up with the Free Representation Unit and the Bar Pro Bono Unit last week to devastating effect at a quiz night held at the Law Society. The event was organised by staff at the Law Society and raised money for the Stroke Association.

Unfortunately the combined force of the three charities was deemed to contravene quiz rules and so our team was split in two. This had the desired effect of diluting our various fields of expertise sufficiently that our two teams, The Charity Cases and Pro Bono A-Go-Go, finished second and third from bottom respectively. We won’t mention some of the Law Society teams who did not appear to be subject to the same stringent rules on team size…

Your Chance to Win!
With quizzes on the brain, we’ve set our own challenge for you. Anyone responding with all five correct answers will win a limited edition, vintage, Solicitors Pro Bono Group vinyl bag. This stylish prize is a versatile fashion piece, equally suitable for weekend jaunts up the Kings Road, as it is for carrying those important papers to a business meeting.

David Jane
We were deeply saddened to hear that David Jane, a sole practitioner in Cornwall, recently lost his 10 year battle with cancer.

David Jane won our 2006 Best Contribution by an Individual Pro Bono Award for his “altruistic unpaid work on behalf of the oppressed and disadvantaged.”
David set up DJ Law, a floating law clinic- arguably the most innovative LawWorks Clinic ever – operating from a boat in St Austell and cruising around Cornwall’s small and often isolated coastal communities to provide free legal advice to people who could not afford to pay for it in areas including debt, housing, family and employment.

David was a remarkable individual who epitomised the spirit of pro bono work. His philosophy is that “none of us know what we’ll be remembered for when, for whatever reason, we stop working, but we’d prefer to be remembered for the good we’ve done.”

Our thoughts are with David’s family.
