At the end of May, we said goodbye (at least for the time being) to Rebecca Sheldon, Manager of LawWorks North, who will be otherwise occupied for the next year looking after her twins, who are due to arrive next month. I am sure that after project-managing the start of LawWorks North, looking after twins will be a good rest for Becs. A big welcome goes to Jan Hart, who starts as LawWorks North Manager this week – you can read about her later in this issue. May also saw the formal launch of the audit by ALLIES (“a local lawyer in every school”), with the objective of determining the current extent of engagement by lawyers in school governing bodies. If you haven’t already done so, visit the link on our website and complete the questionnaire. The big news, however, is that summer has finally arrived. Fortunately, the temperature only started climbing after the London Legal Support Trust sponsored walk (see later), to spare all those who foreswore the temptations of the Chancery Lane drinking establishments to labour in a good cause around the 6 mile course – to say nothing of Paul Newdick, our Chairman, last seen sprinting around Green Park in his jogging gear. I hope you are enjoying the sunshine, and that it hangs around until next week, for the LawWorks Ball. We are now in the final countdown to the big event, at which we are looking forward to seeing many of you, preferably having a drink on the terrace in the gentle Inner Temple evening sunshine… Rebecca Hilsenrath
The 5th London Legal Walk – Monday 18 May 2009
The number of walkers was down on last year, largely as a result of the economic climate, but those who came along greatly enjoyed an amble in the countryside. Walkers included staff from the Vodafone in-house legal team and lawyers from Gardner Leader (Newbury) and Charles Russell LLP (Oxford) who together have raised over £1200 so far. Many thanks to all of those who took part in and sponsored the Walk – I am already angling for a return trip next year! Alison Ingram

The talk was delivered by Alessandro Liotta of London Young Lawyers Group and his colleague Justin Costley. Their informative and very detailed presentation got all attendees actively involved during the talk. As with all of the practical advice talks run by LawWorks the session proved to be very beneficial to everyone attending. LawWorks for Community Groups will be organizing another session on Employment – Discrimination Law scheduled for 10th July 2009, 10:00 – 12:00 in partnership with Voluntary Action Westminster.
The sessions will take place at the Store Street College of Law in the Legal Advice Centre, where full office facilities are available. You will be covered by the College's insurance and you can volunteer to do as much or as little as you wish. It is envisaged advice calls will take place between 6-8pm on any week day convenient to the Volunteer Lawyer. The advice will cover anything employment related, and calls will not be limited to pre-litigation matters. COLETA may also offer clients a FRU referral as the College of Law is a FRU Referral Agency. The Legal Advice Centre employs a Supervising Solicitor who specialises in employment, who will coordinate the sessions and is available to answer any queries concerning the service. To volunteer please email sally.gill@lawcol.co.uk; or call 01483 216490 Further information is here.
Unfortunately the combined force of the three charities was deemed to contravene quiz rules and so our team was split in two. This had the desired effect of diluting our various fields of expertise sufficiently that our two teams, The Charity Cases and Pro Bono A-Go-Go, finished second and third from bottom respectively. We won’t mention some of the Law Society teams who did not appear to be subject to the same stringent rules on team size… Your Chance to Win! David Jane won our 2006 Best Contribution by an Individual Pro Bono Award for his “altruistic unpaid work on behalf of the oppressed and disadvantaged.” David was a remarkable individual who epitomised the spirit of pro bono work. His philosophy is that “none of us know what we’ll be remembered for when, for whatever reason, we stop working, but we’d prefer to be remembered for the good we’ve done.” Our thoughts are with David’s family.
